Accessen Powers "Green Petroleum" Breakthrough in Envision's Chifeng Project

In July 2025, Envision's Chifeng Zero-Carbon Hydrogen Energy Industrial Park dispatched its first green ammonia batch, enabling the world's first green ammonia marine fuel bunkering at Dalian's COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry Terminal, facilitated by Sinopec SINOBUNKER. This "zero-carbon refueling" milestone advances China's "dual-carbon" goals and sets a global precedent for decarbonizing shipping. Green ammonia, dubbed "green petroleum", serves as a zero-carbon industrial raw material and clean energy carrier, producing only nitrogen and water upon combustion -- a breakthrough for sustainable shipping. Powered by 100% green electricity, this project establishes a complete chain from ammonia production to ship operations, offering a replicable model for global renewable energy applications in maritime transport.

Envision's Chifeng project, the world's largest green hydrogen-ammonia initiative with a 1.52 million-ton capacity, launched its 320,000-ton first phase in 2025. By integrating wind, solar, and storage, it creates a zero-carbon "green electricity-green hydrogen-green ammonia" chain, eliminating fossil fuel reliance. Clean electricity powers advanced electrolysis to produce high-purity green hydrogen, which reacts with nitrogen to yield zero-carbon ammonia -- easy to store, transport, and decompose for hydrogen delivery. Certified by Bureau Veritas as the world's first renewable ammonia, this cost-competitive project is the first to achieve commercial operation. A 150 million yuan ammonia tank stores energy equivalent to 100 million kWh, compared to 60 billion yuan for equivalent conventional storage. Upon completion, the project will cut global carbon emissions by 9.12 million tons annually, equivalent to 15.2 million fuel-powered vehicles, marking a new era of large-scale, commercial green hydrogen-ammonia production.

Unlike gray ammonia, which emits nearly 4 tons of carbon per ton using fossil fuels, green ammonia leverages wind and solar power for a near-zero carbon footprint. The project integrates renewable energy with hydrogen and ammonia production, addressing the intermittency of wind and solar through the AI-driven "Tianshu" controller. This system predicts resource fluctuations in real-time, enabling dynamic synergy between production units and shifting from "source-follows-load" to "source-load interaction". A megawatt-scale alkaline-PEM hybrid system, powered by 100% green electricity, supports this fully dynamic green chemical plant, reducing reliance on large-scale storage and boosting efficiency.

 

Shanghai Accessen Co., Ltd. provides advanced heat exchange solutions for the project, including plate and fully welded heat exchangers and skid-mounted cooling systems. These ensure efficient electrolyte cooling, gas purification, and system stability in hydrogen production. For instance, plate heat exchangers cool electrolyzer temperatures above 80°C and condense moisture from hydrogen and oxygen gases (70-90°C), enhancing purity and protecting equipment. The skid-mounted demineralized water system cools rectifier cabinets, optimizing space and stability. In alkaline electrolysis, Accessen's solutions reduce drying equipment load, prevent corrosion, and enable water reuse, minimizing environmental impact. These technologies enhance energy efficiency, ensure stable green ammonia production, and reduce carbon emissions.

 

The project's green ammonia has secured long-term contracts with European and Southeast Asian firms, including Marubeni Corporation, reinforcing its global market potential as "green petroleum".
